What age can my child join?
Our sections are split by age:
Squirrels: 4–6 years
Beavers: 6–8 years
Cubs: 8–10½ years
Scouts: 10½–14 years
Explorers: 14–18 years
Does my child need experience before joining?
No. Everyone is welcome. Young people can join at any stage and will be supported by leaders and other members while they settle in.
Can my child try Scouts before joining?
Yes. New members are normally welcome to attend a trial session before officially joining.
What happens on the first night?
Your child will meet the leaders, join in with activities, meet other young people and get a feel for how the section works.
Do parents/carers need to stay?
Usually parents do not need to stay, but leaders will discuss this if your child needs extra support settling in.
How much does it cost?
Each section has membership fees which help cover running costs, badges, activities and equipment. Trips, camps and special events may have extra costs.
Do I need to buy uniform straight away?
No. We recommend waiting until your child has settled in. Leaders will advise what uniform is needed.
Where do badges go on the uniform?
Badge positions depend on the section. Please see our Badge Placement page for diagrams and guidance.
How often do meetings take place?
Sections normally meet weekly during term time. Leaders will provide details of times, dates and any changes.
What activities will my child do?
Activities can include games, outdoor skills, teamwork challenges, crafts, badge work, community projects, camps and adventures.
Are leaders DBS checked?
Yes. Adult volunteers complete the required Scout checks, including safeguarding training and appropriate background checks.
What if my child has additional needs?
Please speak to the section leader. Scouting aims to be inclusive and leaders will discuss how best to support your child.
Can parents help?
Yes! Parent support is always welcome, from occasional help to becoming a regular volunteer.
How do we communicate with parents?
Your section leader will explain the communication methods used for updates, events and important information.
